Lola's Story: Permanent Pain From a Pointless Surgery
Scroll down to meet Lola and her adopter in a short video.
Tiny Lola never had a loud bark. Since her vocal cords were cut to "soften" it, she sounds odd, sometimes like a bird whistling and chirping.
Like many animals whose voices have been altered, she coughs and gags persistently and has trouble swallowing thanks to surgery that's not only dangerous, it's pointless: Lola was given to a shelter after she was devocalized.
One day she may face the same $2,000 life-saving procedure Porter and Stella needed to remove scarring that developed over their airways after their vocal cords were cut.
All because someone didn't want to hear the voices they were born with.
