UPDATE: On June 21, the NYS Senate closed its 2011-12 legislative session. We are disappointed that Majority Leader Skelos chose not to bring the devocalization ban to the floor for a vote. Read more here.
Last Day to Ban Devocalization of Dogs & Cats!
The Proposed NYS Devocalization Ban Was Sent to the Senate and Must Pass As Written by June 21 To End This Outrageous Act of Animal Cruelty.
But the Legislation is Stalled and About to Die. If it Does, Helpless Dogs and Cats Will Die Too.
Live in NYS? You Can Save Them From Vocal Cord Mutilation By Calling The 2 Senators Below Daily Through the End of the Day Today.
SENATORS WANT YOUR VOTE IN NOVEMBER.
TELL THEM YOU WANT THEIR VOTE FOR THE DEVOCALIZATION BAN ... AS WRITTEN.
Get other humane New Yorkers to do the same. Tweet this link and post it to Facebook: http://bit.ly/MBNHzN
Legislation banning devocalization, the abhorrent practice of cutting vocal cords just to stifle a dog's or cat's voice, passed the NYS Assembly overwhelmingly thanks to your calls.
But it also must pass the Senate to become law. And time's running out. The legislation is stalled in a Senate committee as a result of lobbying by special interests that profit from this risky, unnecessary vocal cord surgery.
If the devocalization ban doesn't pass the Senate by the end of the day, June 21, it will die.
If amended, it will allow and legitimize instead of prohibiting devocalization.
Dogs and cats don't need to be surgically stifled. They don't want to choke to death, struggle to breathe, cough and gag relentlessly--common outcomes of devocalization even when performed by experienced vets.
What helpless animals need is an enforceable law to protect them.
They need your voice to pass the devocalization ban as written.
PLEASE CALL EVERY DAY THROUGH JUNE 21 AND GET 3 FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME. EVERY HUMANE VOICE COUNTS!
TELL LAWMAKERS TO PROTECT THOSE VICTIMIZED BY DEVOCALIZATION...NOT THE LOBBIES THAT PROFIT FROM IT!
Senators are yielding to special interests that want to kill the devocalization ban because they profit from this cruel, unnecessary surgery. These lobbies have deep pockets. You have something more important in an election year: your vote and your voice. Use them to protect animals!
- Call daily, don't just email. Emails can be ignored; calls can't. - Get voicemail? Keep calling till you speak with an aide. - To ensure your message is clear, use the wording below. Add to it if you wish, but be brief--and always polite. - For follow-up calls: Ask the status of the devocalization ban, then repeat your original message.
You must specify "as written" because amendments to the law would hurt animals. If asked the bill number, it is S6167C/A3431D. 1) Tell the office of Sen. Majority Leader Skelos at 518-455-3171 and 516-766-8383: "I'd like Sen. Skelos to ensure the devocalization ban becomes law as written today. The Assembly took a humane stand. The Senate should."
AND this call is very important too... 2) Tell the office of your own NYS Senator (in Albany, not DC): "I'm a constituent. I want the devocalization ban to become law as written today. It's a top priority for me, and I vote."

BAN DEVOCALIZATION TO SAVE DOGS AND CATS FROM LIFELONG ANGUISH, AGONIZING DEATH... Devocalization is always dangerous, no matter how skilled the vet or what instrument is used, including laser. Even a little scarring, a normal outcome of any surgery, can block the airway. Animals choke to death as a result. They retch and gag, cough and wheeze relentlessly. Suffer heatstroke in mild weather. Inhale food and vomit into their lungs. ... ALL FOR HUMAN CONVENIENCE AND GREED This unnecessary surgery doesn't benefit dogs and cats at all. Devocalized animals are abandoned and convenience euthanized for the same reasons as any other--or when people can't or won't pay $2,000 to remove scar tissue blocking their dog's or cat's airway. What do you think happens to those animals? People who select, train and care for animals responsibly and humanely keep dogs and cats out of shelters. Behavior-masking surgery doesn't.
WHY DOES NYS CONTINUE TO SANCTION THIS BRUTALITY? Devocalization is mutilation. That's why it's long been outlawed in many countries and since 2010 in Massachusetts.
It is outrageous that New York State still allows this brutality.
Dogs and cats are powerless to end it. You're not.
Give it everything you've got TODAY.
Save the voices, wellbeing and lives of dogs and cats.
Make sure the devocalization ban passes as written.
